How we can help

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME)

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, also know as myalgic encephalomyelitis or Royal Free disease after the London hospital where it was first identified, is characterised by extremely low energy levels following viral illnesses such as Glandular Fever. The theory is that some viruses alter the immune system, causing the body to react to stress, chemicals, bacteria, toxins, etc. in ways it did not react before.

The symptoms include extreme physical and mental tiredness, muscle and joint pains, headache, abdominal pain, cold extremities, pallor, pins and needles of numbness, inability to concentrate, forgetfulness, difficulty understanding written words, panic attacks, unstable emotions, uncontrollable bouts of weeping and depression.

There is no simple treatment. The most important need is rest - do 50-75% of what you normally do, and stop as soon as you feel tired. Before fully accepting the diagnosis it is necessary to make sure that everything else has been ruled out, including problems with the pituitary gland.
